What is the Mergoum?
The mergoum (or margoum), is a woven floor rug embroidered on a layer of cotton, which gives it a rigid and solid look. The mergoum is typically made in the towns on Oudhref, El Jem and Kairouan in Tunisia using ancient weaving techniques. Our mergoums are handmade in the town of El Jem.
The origin of the mergoum is Berber. The diamond shapes that dominate the mergoum rug are called “regma” which symbolises fertility in the Berber culture. Typically, the mergoum is decorated by three types of diamonds or “regma”. It is also surrounded by two edges decorated with diverse Berber shapes, such as diamonds, zigzags and triangles.
These stunning creations are the work of extraordinary and talented women, who use ancient traditional weaving techniques to create these timeless masterpieces. Through their looms, these women transform the raw wool into the beautiful rugs, such as the one you see before you.
